EUROPEAN POET OF FREEDOM

The European Poet of Freedom is a literary award, poetry festival and publishing series presenting the volumes of authors shortlisted for the given edition of the competition. The EPoF is organised every two years.

The 9th edition of the European Poet of Freedom Festival took place in Gdańsk between 16 and 18 April 2026. The Award winners were Amina Elmi (Denmark) and her translator Bogusława Sochańska.

The organizer of the European Poet of Freedom Festival is the Gdańsk Institute of City Culture, which, from the first edition to the 2024-2026 cycle, also organized the European Poet of Freedom Award and, from 2018 to 2026, also published the European Poet of Freedom – Nominations series. From 2010 to 2016, the series was published by słowo/obraz terytoria publishing house. Starting with the 2026-2028 cycle, the role of the award organizer and publisher was taken by the House of Literature in Gdańsk.

The European Poet of Freedom Award is funded by the City of Gdańsk.

In 2026 the Festival was co-financed from the funds of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund – a state special-purpose fund.

Four volumes shortlisted for the European Poet of Freedom Literary Award in 2026 were co-financed from the funds of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund: Amina Elmi, With All My Love (transl. by Bogusława Sochańska), Laima Kreivytė, States of Weightlessness (transl. by Dominika Jagiełka), Luigi Nacci, How Light Passes. Poems from 2004–2024 (transl. by Joanna Ganobis), A.E. Stallings, The Other Side of the Detail. Poems from 1999–2024 (transl. by Janusz Solarz).
